The International Press Academy is pleased to present one of their highest honors, the Mary Pickford Award to legendary actress Ellen Burstyn to commemorate her outstanding artistic contribution to the entertainment industry.
Her lifetime of achievement, making us laugh, cry and shudder, will be celebrated at the 19th Annual Satellite Awards Gala Dinner taking place on February 15, 2015. Burstyn is one of the few actresses to have earned an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony Award, among dozens of other accolades and accomplishments in the film, theater and television industries.
She started in theater in the 1950s and earned Academy Award nominations for “The Last Picture Show”, “The Exorcist”, “Resurrection”, “Same Time Next Year” and “Requiem for a Dream”. She won an Oscar for Best Actress portraying Alice Hyatt, a widow who takes her son across the country in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” directed by Martin Scorsese.
She won a Tony Award for “Same Time, Next Year” and two Emmy Awards (after being nominated five times) for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries for “Political Animals”. She also won for Outstanding Guest in a Drama for “Law and order : Special Victims Unit.”
A tireless activist, Burstyn worked to free convicted boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter from jail and served as president of the Actors’ Equity Association from 1982 to 1985. She also serves on the Board of Selectors of Jefferson Award for Public Service.
Ellen Burstyn joins past winners such as Rod Steiger, Jodie Foster, Susan Sarandon, Gena Rowlands, Mitzi Gaynor, Martin Landau, Kathy Bates, Michael York, Terence Stamp, Mike Medavoy and others in receiving this award.
