Los Angeles/ February 1, 2019 – The International Press Academy (IPA) is celebrating the diverse and versatile actor Rade Serbedzija as the recipient of the prestigious Mary Pickford Awardfor Outstanding Artistic Contribution to the Entertainment Industryat the 23rd annual Satellite Awards.
Rade joins the esteemed ranks of previous honorees that include Rod Steiger, Alan J. Pakula, Francis Ford Coppola, Maximilian Schell, Karl Malden, Arnon Milchan, Robert Evans, Louis Gossett Jr., Kathy Bates, Jodie Foster, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Williams, Gena Rowlands, Mitzi Gaynor, Martin Landau, Michael York, Terence Stamp, Mike Medavoy, Ellen Burstyn, Louise Fletcher, Edward James Olmos, and last year’s recipient, Dabney Coleman.
Actor, writer, singer, director, composer, poet, producer, teacher and activist, Rade is a star with many talents who mastered roles as diverse as Peer Gynt, Don Juan, Oedipus, Hamlet, King Lear and Richard III. Rade’s roles run the gamut from brutal villain to curmudgeonly grandfather, from tough military leader to trusted best friend in more than 150 films.
He played the brave mayor of an Armenian village who leads refugees to fight the Ottoman army in “The Promise,” and he portrayed the vengeful mafia chief and terrorist in “Taken 2.”He became a lovelorn Russian prince in “Downton Abbey”and the lovable wand-maker in “Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows: Part 1” as well as the Russian oligarch Tretiak in “The Saint.”
Rade was born in Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia, and attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts at the University of Zagreb. He has published six books, recorded nine albums and continues work on stage, in film and television.
His co-stars have included Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave, Glenn Close, Charlise Theron and John Turturro, among many others. He has worked with directors such as John Woo, Stanley Kubrick Clint Eastwood and Phillip Noyce, and is a favorite of Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski, who cast him in the Oscar-nominated film “Before the Rain,” which won Rade the “Golden Lion” Award at the Venice Film Festival.
He also appeared in“Space Cowboys,” “Mission: Impossible 2,” “The Saint,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Batman Begins,” “ EuroTrip,” “The Quiet American,” “Shooter,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Snatch”and many more.
He received additional accolades for “Fugitive Pieces,” Bravo maestro”and “72 days,”the debut movie by his son Danilo Serbedzija.
“Rade is an actor without borders and his talents have no limits,” said IPA president Mirjana Van Blaricom. “He really earned the Mary Pickford Award for outstanding artistic contribution to the entertainment industry.”
Rade will accept his Mary Pickford Awardat the awards ceremony held at the Mondrian Hotel in Hollywood on February 22, 2019.
